The final sentence on page two surprised me. Sadly, I'm sure that the statistics are similar in other countries in Europe, and around the world. Which is why this campaign to raise awareness is so important, not just in America, where Three Rivers is filmed, but internationally.

Susie you are soooo right,   WOW only 17 % have a card. . . that's not good at all.   Many people do NOT make their wishes known to family members and nothing can happen without your consent.

Very sad,  but hopefully things will change, people will become aware and give the gift of life!   Thanks for making me aware of what's going on outside my little world.

Awareness for organ donation is something that has been neglected in Germany for quite some time. I remember that there was a campaign when I was in High School to get a donor card, they were given out at every corner. Now, not so much, you have to get them from the Gesundheitsamt, but that's quite a stretch to go there.
It would be great if donor cards would be laid out in every waiting room at the doctors, every church should have them amongst their bulletins, at every city office they should just have them around.
It's so easy to fill the document and just wear it with your drivers license.
Lately, people have been encouraged to write a distinct will about what procedures they would want to have done in case they fall into coma or are too sick to say what they want, but that's appealing more to elder people. It should be something appealing to young people, and this concert might just be the thing to do.
Sadly, this board is the first place I heard about this campaign. It should be in our news!

You know, I couldn't get those German statistic out of my head, only 17% of the population! I decided to check what they were here in the UK. Not much better. At the moment just 27% of the population have joined the NHS Organ Donor Register. This is despite 90% of the population saying they support organ donation.

Yes, sadly, even though most people agree with organ donation in theory, the idea of confronting their own mortality and registering as an organ donor is scarey for them.  It takes a lot of education and overcoming old beliefs and superstitions.

I received this from Sabine today, they're getting a person filmed greeting from Alex:

Information from New York Organ Donor Network:

Donate Life America is pleased to announce the First World
Day/European Day of Organ Donation that will formally take place in
Berlin, Germany on October 4, 2009 as part of the 2009 Organ Donation
Congress and ISODP Meeting. The motto for the event is: “You have the
power to donate life – be an organ donor.” The main attraction for
this event in Berlin is an open air concert in front of the
Brandenburg Gate featuring famous European musicians and bands where
hundreds of thousands are expected to attend. The musical program will
be interspersed with short live talks, interviews and video statements
by experts, transplant recipients, donor families and celebrities. One
such video statement will come from Alex O’Loughlin who plays a
transplant surgeon on the new CBS medical drama Three Rivers. Here is
the text of his statement which has already been recorded. “Hi, this
is Alex O’Loughlin with CBS’ new medical drama Three Rivers. I am
honored to play a transplant surgeon on the show which premieres
tonight in the states and I want to congratulate you on the work you
are doing to raise awareness of organ donation worldwide and save
lives through donation and transplantation. I wish I could be there
with you celebrating World Donation Day and I am happy to play a small
role in what you are doing to encourage the world to Donate Life.
Thank you.”
You may have noticed that World Donation Day is occurring
on the same day as the premier of Three Rivers, October 4. Donate Life
America is very excited about Alex’s personal commitment to helping
increase organ, eye and tissue donation and understand that this is
just the start. Here is a link to the event page and press release.
